about

“Juneteenth: A Catalytic Sound compilation in support of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund” is released by the Catalytic Sound collective to coincide with Bandcamp donating its share of sales to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund on Juneteenth 2020.

In recognition of this project, the day it celebrates, and in solidarity with the Movement for Black Lives, all funds raised on Juneteenth 2020 and afterward from sales of this record will go toward the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (https://www.naacpldf.org).

This album features members of the Catalytic Sound collective, a musicians' co-op with the mission of developing new economic models for experimental musicians.

Thanks in advance for all you can do to support the cause.

07 Klapotetz [Elisabeth Harnik]. Elisabeth Harnik (church organ). Recorded by Elisabeth Harnik at Gleisdorf (Austria), July 25th 2015. Dedicated to Pauline Oliveros.

A Klapotetz is a wooden mechanical device on a high wooden pole, similar to a windmill. It is used as a  bird scarer  in the  vineyards  of traditional wine-growing landscapes of Slovenia,  Austria, and  Croatia. It is one of the symbols of Slovenia and Styria/Austria. In English it could be described as a bird-scaring rattle, a wind-rattle or a wind-clapper. During my research for an instrumental composition which reflects the sound of the Klapotetz, I came across an interesting imitation of the device – a “Klapotetz”-stop - which was built in an organ in Gleisdorf (Styria/Austria) parish church. I got so inspired that I organised a visit to Gleisdorf and got the permit to play the instrument. Listening deeply I improvised on the organ which lead to the spontaneously constructed piece which you now have in your ears. - Elisabeth Harnik

Change, move, dead clock, that this fresh day
May break with dazzling light to these sick eyes.
Burn, glare, old sun, so long unseen,
That time may find its wound again, and cleanse
What ever it is that a wound remembers
After the healing ends. -Weldon Kees
